This month, Microsoft released Windows 11, bringing significant changes to the storied operating system, including the first name change in six years. The Windows 11 update started trickling out on October 5, however it will be phased out on eligible devices. (If you don't want to wait, here's how to test if your PC is compatible first and how to download it early.)
Windows 11 has a slew of new features, including the ability to download and run Android apps on your Windows PC, as well as upgrades to Microsoft Teams, the Start menu, and the software's overall style, which is cleaner and more Mac-like. (See all of our favorite new features in Windows 11 and how to utilize them.) However, take in mind that not all of the functions are now available.
7 new features included in Windows 11
- A new, more Mac-like interface. The Start menu and Taskbar are centered in Windows 11, which has a clean appearance with rounded corners, pastel colors, and a centered Start menu.
- Integrated Android apps. The Amazon Appstore, which will be available from within the new Microsoft Store, will bring Android apps to Windows 11. There were a few methods to get Android apps on Windows 10, particularly if you had a Samsung Galaxy phone, but this is the first time it's been done natively. (Note that Android apps will not be available when Windows 11 is first released.)
- Widgets. For some time (remember Windows Vista desktop gadgets?), Including recent Windows 10 updates, you can access the widget directly from the taskbar to personalize the widget and see what you're doing.
- Microsoft Teams integration. Teams has been improved and pinned to the Windows 11 system tray for easier access (slightly similar to Apple's FaceTime). You can access your team from Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS.
- Xbox tech for better gaming. Windows 11 takes advantage of certain features on the Xbox console, such as automatic HDR and Direct Storage, to make your games better on your Windows PC.
- Better virtual desktop support. In Windows 11, you can set up a virtual desktop similar to macOS and switch between multiple desktops for personal use, work, school, or play. You can also change the wallpaper on any virtual desktop.
- Easier transition from monitor to laptop, and better multitasking. The new operating system includes a feature called snap groups and snap layout collections for apps that you use at the same time. These are in the system tray and can be viewed or minimized at the same time to easily switch between tasks. You can also easily plug and unplug your monitor without losing the location of open windows.
